Living with a Canadian family is an excellent way to learn more English.

Families give you a warm, comfortable place to practise the English you are learning.

You will also learn about Canadian customs and culture.

A homestay family gives you a private room and breakfast and dinner.  They will introduce you to their neighbourhood and make you a part of their family.

Jigsaw visits all homestay families.  We try to have the families close to the school.  The homestay coordinator is available 24 hours a day in case of emergency.

Dormitory Accommodation is available in the summer months.

Host Family Tips

  •         Be polite.  Call you host family if you will not be home for dinner.

  •         Communication is important.  Talk with your host family and Jigsaw.

  •         During your first few days in Canada you may feel homesick.  Be sure to take care of yourself.

  •         Make sure you tell your host family if there is any food you cannot eat or if you have any health problems.

Canadian Cuisine

You may find Canadian food very different from what you are used to.

Food grown in different climates tastes different just like water tastes different.

Make sure to try different food before you decide you don’t like it.

Try to describe to your family what you usually eat.  They may be able to make something similar to it.

BREAKFAST:

This is usually a quick meal and may include:  bread or toast with butter, jam, peanut butter, cream cheese, other cheese, cereal, an egg, fruit and/or yogurt.

Very few people in Toronto cook breakfast during the week.

On the weekend they may have cooked breakfasts.

LUNCH:

You will usually eat lunch at the school.

You may make your own sandwiches or eat at one of the quick food restaurants around Jigsaw.

DINNER:

Toronto’s multicultural background is obvious at dinner time.

You may eat Italian pasta, Indian curry, Portuguese chicken, British roast beef, German sausage, Canadian/American hamburgers or pizza, low-fat fish and salad and/or Chinese stir-fry.

You will most likely try foods you have never tasted before and find that you really like them.

If you want a more complete guide to homestay please let us know and we will send you the information by e-mail.
