Business analytics has been historically viewed as a specialized field, with a strong emphasis on knowledge of statistical algorithms and tools. Typical analytics teams at most companies used to be staffed with people with Masters Degrees or Ph.Ds in statistics and mathematics, with the skills required to make sense of large volumes of data, summarize critical information, and to generate forecasts about the future.

Ultimately, to be able to generate insights about the business, to provide data based inputs for refining marketing or customer strategies, or to suggest optimal use of business resources, a deep understanding of business conditions and business constraints is critical. Increasingly therefore, analytics companies are hiring people that have the appropriate background to understand and interpret statistical models in the context of business needs.
