Nakul landed his dream job through campus placements by completing an analytics course during his MBA
For analytics, how has the recruitment strategy of top companies evolved over the years?
When analytics was a more nascent field, companies used to focus on hiring candidates with a Ph.D. or a Master’s degree in quantitative domains. As the field developed, companies realised that defining the business problem was a critical first step. These data scientists were unable to gain insights as they could not define the business problem. When it came to understanding business, their excellent technical and quantitative skills could not rescue them. Hence, the companies shifted focus and began hiring data-savvy business professionals from top b-schools.
Why did you decide to shift to analytics?
After completing my B.Tech, I joined a large consulting firm as a software engineer. My work was limited to coding and testing software products, and I had no exposure to business or strategy. I wanted to take my career to the next level, and time was running out. I decided to go for an MBA and during the course I was introduced to analytics.
I was amazed when I saw its application across diverse industries. I started researching online – I had finally found my passion. My research also indicated that the demand for quality talent was quite high, and I could get a job in any leading organisation if I picked up the right skills.
How did you manage the transition, given that you were already busy with your MBA coursework?
I planned well and decided to learn the latest data analytics tools and technologies before appearing for interviews through campus placements. I upskilled even as I was doing my MBA, and I believe this gave me a head start over others. I joined Jigsaw Academy’s Data Science with SAS course. At Jigsaw, I got to work on real-life case studies, thus gaining practical knowledge of analytics. This reflected in my interviews – I was confident while answering prospective employers’ questions.
Jigsaw Academy did not stop at training – they helped me highlight my analytics skills in my resume, coached me for job interviews, and even facilitated some interviews. This extensive preparation helped me bag my dream job at IMRB during campus placements.
