Sanjiv is an IT veteran who decided
to explore the world of analytics.
My brush with data began in 2008
In 2008 I got a job with Quattrowireless, a very early mobile advertising company that had been acquired by Apple. There is where I came to know about Big Data and analytics. The whole idea was fascinating, more so when I got to see it being implemented.
Until then I was primarily working on the software and product engineering side of the business. I had never really thought of another career path other than being a Chief Architect.
Then in 2013 I joined Komli Media as Director of Engineering Data and Analytics, leading their data and analytics team in data science, predictive analytics, Machine Learning implementation, campaign optimization and the data collection pipeline. I was also responsible for multi TB (terabyte) Hadoop-based data storage and making data available for online and offline processing. I worked on different algorithms and predictive models to improve digital campaign performance.
I had solid data-specific experience, but nevertheless felt the need to bring structure to my knowledge
Even though I had over 7 years of on the job analytics learning, I came to a point where I felt the need to join a more advanced analytics training program. I felt it was important to bring structure to my knowledge and get a recognized certificate from a reputed university that would add credentials to my profile. More than just a profile enhancement, I needed to be part of a program that would help me develop a new outlook towards my career and professional progress.
And that’s why I chose the Jigsaw Bocconi Executive Programme in Business Analytics (EPBA)
I looked at various other programs, including the one at IIM Bangalore. I found the EPBA to be more relevant to the kind of skills I was looking to develop. I was coming into the programme with about 19 years of experience in software development and engineering and needed a course that would properly help me pivot towards analytics and data science.
I wanted a course which focused less on theoretical concepts and more on practical implementation, a course which didn’t just explain how a model was derived but what its pros and cons were, and how to use, and evaluate it.
The EPBA seemed to fit all these criteria and promised to give me enough hands-on knowledge, enabling me to judge a model and make decisions using data. Also the certification from Bocconi would really add immense value to my career profile.
My EPBA has been the game changer for my career
The content covers a very wide range of topics and the teaching is very broad-based and covers some very practical issues. This, to a large extent, helped me better assimilate the theories and develop a strong grasp on the course and concepts. There was a very good mix of participants from all kinds of backgrounds, bringing multi-domain experiences into the classroom which made for an enhanced learning process.
The best part of the program was the project, where we worked towards a real time solution to an actual business problem. Going into the job, I already had a well-established business understanding of data and analytics and this definitely gave me a much needed edge.
Going back to school after having an extensive career in the IT sector gave me a new direction to turn to. I could see myself doing a lot more, now with a brand new vision of what I wanted my career to be.
From Chief Architect to Chief Data Scientist
In my current role I have worked on core data science problems such as app classification automation using topic modelling, classification of Twitter tweets, building data platform architecture, and geo-spatial analytics for brand affinity. I have also worked on developing team capability in text mining and algorithms for word sense disambiguation, key work extraction, name entity extraction.
The experience of working on these projects expanded my knowledge and understanding of data science and its applications. I can honestly say that the Jigsaw-Bocconi EPBA has given me the right tools and boost for a successful career in data science and analytics.
There is no particular time or age to take up analytics. I found my passion in it after serving in numerous other senior and managerial roles. The EPBA gave me the perfect edge I needed, which I believe few other programs can manage.
