Why Would an IIM-C Grad with 14+ Years of BFSI Experience Decide to Sign up for ALL the Jigsaw Courses?

A couple of months into a course, all Jigsawites are requested to fill out a feedback form. We just had to share this particular one with all of you. It’s from a student who subscribed for our 99k combo offer (lifetime access to all our beginner and advanced courses).

I have subscribed to all the courses in Jigsaw, and I am really enjoying the flow and to the point delivery. I head analytics at NPCI and this was picture perfect. I know that my team members will all benefit from the knowledge I am gaining.”

All the very best!!!
Lakshmikanth Darbha

We were indeed humbled to receive this feedback from Lakshimikanth, who has over 14 years of Experience in the BFSI domain, and is presently the Associate Vice President – Analytics at NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India). He is a Bsc economics honours graduate, has a Masters in Financial Management and is a graduate of the Executive Program in Business Analytics from IIM Calcutta, besides being a Six Sigma Blackbelt and a PMO.

We thought it would be a great idea to talk to him and find out more about his work and why he decided to join Jigsaw Academy. Here are excerpts from our interview with him.

When did you first hear about analytics and why did you decide to pick up some analytics skills?

I have had experience in operations research and optimization and have used sensitivity analysis and parts of decision sciences and modelling at beginners levels in my roles in the banking sector. With the growth of the data science industry, I felt the need to stay on top of things and build my analytic skill set. I wanted to be proficient and thorough on most of the emerging concepts.

Tell us about your first mainstream analytics role and why your love it?

My proficiency and flair for numbers made me excel in my previous roles and my management in earlier companies had encouraged me to set up service delivery centers for MIS and start BI practices. After I finished the EPBA from IIM Calcutta, however, I decided to get into mainstream analytics and joined NPCI.

Here at NPCI I am really happy and challenged and there is no looking back. We have full operational freedom to play and experiment with data. I have built a center of excellence, designed the data warehouse, set the vision for the Big Data Journey and setup the Analytics Advisory committee to operationalize the Vision document and the Big Data Journey.

Most importantly the learning curve is high and I anticipate a rich and rewarding career ahead.

So in spite of doing Business Analytics from IIM- C, and working on the forefront of analytics, what made you decide to join Jigsaw to further develop your analytics skill set?

Even though I handle datasets day in and day out, I need refreshers to stay updated with the subject and the industry.

I heard about Jigsaw Academy from Analytics India Magazine, and from my friends circle. It was renowned for industry-relevant course material and for being very hands on, in terms of practical assignments. So naturally, when I decided I wanted to further build my skill set, it was my first choice.

I signed up for the 99k offer, which gives you access to almost every analytics course they offer, be it, Financial, Web, Data Science with R, Sas, Fraud analytics and Big Data.

The honest fact is that most of the concepts that Jigsaw is focusing on in their courses were dealt with during my EPBA in IIM and in my stats classes in college. However, it’s a whole different and amazing kind of learning here and is what differentiates Jigsaw. The way it is taught is ideal for professionals like me. The Jigsaw courses do not focus on boring elaborations but instead have to the point, apt explanations. The material is visually appealing and the manner in which concepts are explained, for eg: need for doing principal component analysis and exploratory factor analysis, is really conducive to learning.

What are your future plans?

I aim to work towards creating a center of excellence and a well-informed team. In fact I have recommended all of my team members, to go through Jigsaw courses.

Do you have any advice for those who want to enter analytics?

Though analytics is not everyone’s cup of tea, if you love abstract thinking go for it!  And remember if you want to survive and do really well in your career, you must commit to being a life long student.

Today you can have data without information but not information without data. The data revolution will wash and disrupt every sector, so much so that Big Data will be the new Normal. So really, everybody needs to pick up some analytics skills, to grow and succeed in the next few decades.

Thanks Lakshmikanth. We wish you the very best in your analytics journey and are indeed proud to have you be part of the Jigsaw family.
